Aluminium Body Mounts For Tamiya Lunch Box
When Tamiya re-released the Lunch Box a few years ago, they addressed a few key weak points on the car, most notably the steering rods, which are now much more substantial and can take a lot more punishment now than the old grasshopper style ones. Despite these improvements though, one key weak-point still remains and that’s in the Body Mounts. The original chromed plastic ones may look nice, but they’re pretty weedy when it comes to taking the punishment that the large and quite heavy ABS body shell can receive during a bash, and lets face it, that’s what a monster truck like this is built for… Bashing! Obtaining replacements has until now always meant purchasing a whole new set of chrome parts, which for most Lunch Box owners has meant amassing a draw full of chrome parts trees with only the body mounts being used.
So for a while now I’ve been on the look out for an alternative solution or upgrade to the plastic ones supplied in the kit, and a few weeks ago, a friend of mine, Jim, put me on to a set of Aluminium Body Mounts for the Tamiya Lunch Box which are made by a company called Model Build. These are an exact, like for like replacement for the original plastic mounts, but as their name suggests, made from Aluminium! Precision machined with an excellent finish, they’re an upgrade that largely goes unnoticed, but in the long run, they’ll save you a fortune in spares! Perfect!
They’re 100% identical to the originals in shape and size, but ever so slightly heavier as you would expect.
Fitting takes just seconds. Just unscrew the original mounts from the chassis, and replace them with the aluminium versions using the screws that were used to hold the plastic ones in place.
Once they’re in place, re-fit the body shell, secure in place with the usual body clips, and you’re ready to go!
Our Verdict
Worth their weight in gold! They’re not cheap at £12.99 + P&P but then you’d spend more than that on a single Chrome Parts tree to replace a set of plastic ones!
